Heke in the Maori language has a variety of meanings; our favourite ones of course have everything to do with movement! Since we’re all about moving people around the beautiful island of Waiheke, we love our name and everything it represents.
Little-known fact; the original Maori name for Waiheke was Te Motu-arai-roa: “the long sheltering island”. But at the time the first European visitors arrived, it was known as Motu-Wai-Heke: “island of trickling waters”.
Since motu means island, this eventually anglicised to Waiheke Island – and is today regarded as the “jewel of the Hauraki Gulf”.
